Description

English Pattern M 1821 Light Cavalry (LC) Officers sword. Perfect very large curved fullered bright finished pipe back blade with a spear point. Left side of the blade is deep etched : Crown over GR over IV. (=Cypher of King George IV, 1820-1830) Intact leather washer. Left ricasso with floral motives and the English sword makers name and residence: ANDREWS over LONDON. Right side is beautiful deep etched in a long scroll with floral motives: MOMENTO MORI - FRANK SIMSON -5th Lt CAVALRY TO - HIS BROTHER GEORGE - MADRAS ARTLLERY. 1836. Excellent bright finished non-detachable steel hilt with a single hand guard and two side bars. Sword knot slit in top. Forward swept quillon with a round final. Stepped back dove head pommel. Excellent wooden grip covered with ray skin and an intact brass twisted wire winding. Some minor wear to the fish skin.
Excellent bright polished steel scabbard with two single loose hanging rings.
Scabbard with some small age spurs only and no serieus dents.

Total length: 106 cm. Width at the ricasso: 3,1 cm

This very early M 1821 LC sword dates back to the years 1820-1830 the reign of King George IV and used by a named British LC officer Frank Simson in the Madras Army in India. In memory of his brother George Simson who served in the Madras Artillery in 1836.
