German Mauser M 1898 Rifle and Carbine. M 98/05. Second type bayonet. Excellent bright finished fullered "butcher" blade. Double maker marked. Very crisp German makers names: SCHUBERT u: SALZER- MASCHINENFABRIK- CHEMNITZ in three lines on the right ricasso and GOTTLIEB HAMMESFAHR - Pyramide - SOLINGEN, FOCHE in three lines on the left ricasso. Prussian cypher; Crown over W over date: 17 with a German inspection marking crisp on the blade spine.
Very good+ bright finished pommel, flash guard, crossguard and quillon. German inspection mark on pommel. Excellent ribbed wooden grips with an oil hole. T-O slot in pommel. The pommel and crossguard show some fine stains only.
Comes in its Excellent blued steel scabbard with no dents.
Very little is known about Schubert & Salzer apart from the evidence of their markings which appear on the right handside of S 89/05 nA bayonets dated 1917 and 1918. This one is double marked.
