English L1A4 bayonet by Hopkinson. (ABCN171-2)(K0)(JN0)
Semi-automatic rifle L1A1 Cal. 7.62 No serial number. Minty dark finished fullered Bowie type blade with a long fuller, first 3 cm blackened. Ricasso is marked 73 and a H in diamant shape. (= makers mark of Hopkinson Ltd. of Sheffield) Blackened pommel is riveted to the tang, marked: C in a box and R in a box on the reverse pommel side. T- type mortise slot. Straight type crossguard with muzzle ring MRD 14.6. Facing the blade the crossguard is marked C in a box. Black painted metal grips are riveted to the tang by two hollow rivets. Both grips are crisp NATO code marked: L1A3 9600257. But these are the wrong grips for this model! We have seen this more often. May be it was simply using grips from old stock.
Minty and correct blued metal no. 5 MK1 scabbard with round frog stud and brass throat. No dents.
The bayonet comes with its minty and correct green polyetheline SRL webbing frog.
Last model of the L1 serial, introduced in the beginning of the 70. Only Hopkinson Ltd. of Sheffield made this L1A4 bayonet with a riveted pommel (and not brazed) and a different Bowie tip. (Also see the book: British and Common wealth bayonets from Ian Skennerton. Page 262.)
The L1A4 model is less common than the L1A3 bayonet.
